1) A "square" of a number is a number times itself, whether that number is negative or positive. The result will -always- be positive. The inverse of the "square" function is the "square root" -- since the results were always positive with the "square" function, you aren't going be able to go the other way if you use negative numbers.
2) You can use square roots if you want to find the width of an area that is shaped as a square. For example, in a room that is 9 square feet large and shaped as a square, you know that the width of the room is 3 feet. (Sqrt (9)=3)

1) Square root implies something multiplied by itself. Positive times positive and negative times negative always result in a positive number. Therefore, to square root a negative number, you are asking for an imaginary number.

2) Finding the side of a square from it's area. First example field of use is construction/engineering.

Another example of everyday use is when you have your 16 baseball cards out, and want to lay them in a square. You do the math and know that you can make 4 rows of 4.

1) A square root, of course, is the number that you multiply times itself to get your target number. (3x3=9, so the square root of 9 is 3.)

If you multiply a positive number times itself (i.e., square it), you always get a positive number for an answer, naturally.

If you multiply a negative number times itself (i.e., square it), the two negatives cancel each other out, and your answer will also always be positive.

So, what do you multiply times itself to get a negative?

2) Common everyday use of square roots:
* I want to make a square piece of (wood, paper, land, garden, whatever) with a certain amount of area. How long should the side be?

Hope this helps!

welcome
1) about ur first question
squaring number means that u multiply it with itself
so if u squared a negative number it will be positive
that means there is no squared negative number
so how can u find a square root for a negative number
but mathematicians call the square root of any negative number "imaginary number"
2) about the second question
I'm sorry i can't find any common everyday uses of square root

You cant have negative square root because a square root finds what number, multiplied my itself, will equal the thing in the square root. However, anything multiplied by itself will always equal a positive number.
