I was wondering if anyone had any information about the pros and cons of animal vaccines. I am doing a paper for school, I can find a lot about the cons but not a lot about the pros except that they protect the animal from diseases, but it is not enough to write a section on the pros. Does anyone know of any good websites with information?

Except that they prevent disease?!!! That alone should be good enough. Try finding some websites that show dogs with distemper or rabies, then use their suffering as a reason. Not to mention tha rabies vaccines have made it very rare for people to get this terrible, almost always fatal illness.

Vaccines are incredibly important for maintaining the health of an animal and in the case of rabies, human health and for thaose reasons are by and large beneficial. There are some groups out there that state that vaccinations are dangerous, but there is no scientific proof for their claims and the risk of a dog dying from a common disease such is parvo is a far higher risk than the risk of complications from vaccination. So beware bogus websites that claim vaccinations are bad. There is some legitimate debate in the veterinary community on how long immunity lasts and whether some vaccinations are being given too frequently. And of course rabies vaccines are required by law in most places. Here's a good legitimate website to help you.

The pros and cons are much the same as for human vaccines. Prevention of disease is a definite 'pro' - remember that for a valued pet, the animal's health is a positive goal in itself. Some animal diseases - most notably rabies - are dangerous to humans as well, so protecting them protects people. You may also want to check out livestock vaccines; some of these animals can carry disease dangerous to humans (such as TB and Brucella); also, keeping them healthy reduces costs and increases yields, protecting the economic viability of these industries while safeguarding our food supply.

The primary 'cons' are expense - which is more of a concern with animals since much of their care is 'optional' - and there is always the chance of adverse reactions. Be very careful about some claims made against vaccines - there is no verified link between vaccines and autism, for example, no matter how much some ignorant moonbat shrieks that there is.
