Imagine if the left apologized for and defend the super extreme end of the right wing, Islam. You know, all of their wars were just and their victims deserving and we should respect their ultra right wing views.

Ok, lets get crazier now, just pretend for a moment that almost all conflicts worldwide were islamic, like say:
Chechnya, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Somalia, Sudan and Dafur genocide, Chad, Philippines, Indonesia, Egypt, Kosovo, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Palestine, Tajikistan, Iraq, Algeria, Southern India, Kashmir, etc..
Given that, they would even apologize more and insist that "its not the religion" and its "we" who should be more tolerant of the worlds most intolerant people.
Just imagine...

does the political left actually believe this nonsense or are they simply using anything they can to gain an advantage?

This has never worked in all of recorded human history, the only way to sucessfuly negotiate peace is through superior firepower. The threat of destruction brings people to the bargaining table, not self destructive weakness, that always emboldens the agressor.
