I'm the mom. And I feel stupid...My kid needs help on math and I can't get the answer for the life of me.

Charles lost 6 kilograms over 4 months. Two months later when he weighed himself, the scale read 82 kilograms. This meant he had gained 4 kilograms in 2 months. What had he weighted 6 months earlier?

Can you show your work and explain to me how the answer comes to be? So I can re explain it to my kid?

What am I missing? Thank you in advance?

x-6=82-4
where x is the original weight that you are looking for...
-6 is the original weight that was lost over the 4 month period...
82-4 is the current weight minus the 4 kilos that were added back on in the last two months...
this gives you all the activity that happened over a six month period...
now you simplify the equation...
x-6=82-4
x-6=78
x=78+6
x=84

the original weight is 84 kilos...
84 kilos minus 6 kilos equals 78 kilos, and when you add 4 kilos to this you end up with 82 kilos which is the weight that you are given to begin with in the problem...
hope this was not confusing...
