a "factor" can be viewed as a piece that is unable to be further divided. For example, in math, factors of integers will be prime numbers. For a number such as 24, we can factor this to 6 * 4 or 8*3... but neither 6, 4, or 8 are primes and can be further divided or factored, so to completely factor 24 we have to continue to factor the parts until we have all prime numbers:

24 = 6 * 4 = 3*2 * 2*2 so 3, 2, 2 and 2 are factors of 24.

This process is called factoring. In algebra we add variables. So 24x^2 would be 24 * x^2... we know how to factor 24, and the factors of x^2 are x*x.

Mathematics. Factor-one of two or more numbers, algebraic expressions, or the like, that when multiplied together produce a given product; a divisor: 6 and 3 are factors of 18.

polynomials in the real world In car accidents...determining how fast a car was going at time of impact (F=ma).
