Oh my, this will keep me thinking for a long time. Probably its the same reason there are more hot dog buns in a pack than there are hot dogs in a pack (or is it the reverse?) I am so confused

That's an interesting question? One that I would have never imagined that I would be attempting to answer, but here it goes lol so why do they make bologna round if the bread is square? Well if they made the bread round then they would be wasting the product and I don't think that the bread companies would want to lose out on any of there products, therefore the same answer goes for the bologna, why make the bologna square if the bread company is not going to make the bread round, but that's just my opinion?

Because bologna is basically a sausage type product. When it was originally made it was forced at high pressure into tubes that were at the end of a mixing apparatus and no real forming process was used. Thus it comes out naturally round. Plus if it wasn't round you wouldn't have those excess edges to give your puppies! : )

As far as I know, bologna is extruded into the shape of a tube. It would be possible to make square bologna, but it would probably be flimsy at the corners like Wendys burger patties.

It saves money. Cutting off all those corners to make it round saves a lot of meat and money. They can sell it to the consumer at a cheaper cost as well.

One of those terribly difficult questions one encounters from time to time. Another being why package 12 hot dogs, but only 8 buns.

For the same reason that weiners are sold in packages of ten while hotdog buns are sold in packages of eight.
