YES we are real and there are thousands in the US. Witches are nothing like what you see in movies or on TV. We don't fly around on brooms or turn people into toads, our wands do not throw sparks we can't do any of the silly tricks portrayed in Harry Potter or Charmed..
I am a Pecti-Witan (aka a Hedge Witch, not Wiccan). We do not cast "evil spells"! It is against our very being. We live our religion (24/7) which can be loosely summed up in our "rede" and that is "Do what thou wilt an in it harm none". We believe that everything we do will come back times 3 so why would we ever want to hurt anyone? I can not sum it up in this small forum tho Amy does a pretty good job of it.
If you want to learn about it (and I hope you do so you will be better informed) you can read books by Scott Cunningham & Raymond Buckland. They will dispell any myths that you are bombarded with by those who are close-minded and ignorant. We do not put evil spells on anyone as some might have you believe. We do not worship the devil. (We don't believe in the existance of a devil) We do our best for humanity and the environment. If we were being influenced or led by the devil, why would he teach us how to use healing herbs and why would he want us to advocate saving the earth? Why would he want us to use our very being to help others? Doesn't that sound more like of "God" than of "Satan"? Can we be so mislead that we spend our entire lives doing good things for people & nature and helping in any way that we can that we are actually doing the work of the "devil"?!? Get real.
We are just normal people who have learned a lot about nature and how to utilize herbs, minerals and candles. You would not be able to spot a witch in a group of people. We look no different than anyone else. Our "powers" are not supernatural.
Sorry about the ranting. But sometimes the Religious Reich gets to me. I would never condemn them for their beliefs. but some have no problem condemning me for mine.

Yes, there are witches. Not ones like you would see in Buffy or Charmed or other Hollywood style special effects. Most of us look quite normal and act quite normal. Not all Wiccans are witches and not all witches are Wiccans. Witches practice witchcraft and magic in its multiple forms. Wiccans follow a religious path that allows the use of magic but does not require it.

Magic and spells are done by visualization and focusing of will. They can and will work but should ALWAYS be done with care. Varying tools and items can be used or not as needed. Just because it is extremely difficult to test scientifically does not mean it does not work or exist.

Here's one American witch talking to you right now.
Evidence enough?
If you're thinking of the magical Halloween wartsy chick that is mistakenly referred to as a witch, then hell no, of course there's none. Such creatures do not exist.
However, ACTUAL witches, also known as Wiccans or Pagans, do exist, and there are thousands or more of us. Look for bumper stickers that say things like, "She changes everything she touches" or "My other car is a broom" or "Back off, I'm a goddess". Or some sort of moon symbol. It is very rare to see a pentacle on peoples' cars for fear of being shot. Sad, isn't it, the stounding amount of misinformed people?
The short answer is--yes!
Blessed Be.

There are tens of thousands of witches in the US and even more world wide. Yes, witchcraft is real. No, we don't fly on brooms or twitch our noses to make "magic." You want proof? Go to Salem, Massechusets and look pretty much anywhere. Laurie Cabot is the official witch of Salem. ( http://www.lauriecabot.com ). Witchcraft is a religion and is recognized by the US government as a religion. Do searches online and start with the Witches Voice website. ( http://www.witchvox.com )

Yes there are witches in the United States. They just aren't what you may be thinking they are. They do not wear a pointed hat and fly around on broomsticks. They do cast spells, but the "magick" they generate is not what you are thinking either. It is based on subtle influences of personal energies in their own personal lives in most of the instances. There are covens of witches across the United States, as well as solitary practicioners, such as I am. Our spells are the equivalent of the "Christian prayers" Our magick is the same as the "Christian divine powers" THe catholic ritual patterns are based off of our rituals and ceremonies. Most "Christian-based" holidays are the same holidays as our Pagan Celebrations. (Easter=Ostara, Christmas=Yule, Beltaine=May Day) We are not Satanic in ANY way Because in order to be satanic we have to believe in Satan, which we don't. THose that say we are satanic are uneducated to the Pagan ways, and should learn before jumping on here and trying to answer questions they know nothing about. We are very real, we do exist, and we do not have green skin, pointed hats, brooms and warts on our noses...(Although I have met a few that should) I hope this answers your question. Many Bright Blessings be upon you!

Witches like on Charmed and Buffy? Nope.
Wiccans? yep. They are real as real can be. Most crafting is positive, and most focus on the balancing of energies in their own lives, and assisting those who ask for help.
Shaman? Yep, those are real too. I personally know a few really powerful ones (in 3 different nations) in the U.S.

Being a witch is a myth. But many women act like real witches. Some women act like witches all over the world. Not only in America.

No, if you mean witches with actual magical powers. That would presuppose the existence of magic or the supernatural, for which no evidence has ever been offered. Doesn't seem likely.
If you mean people who attempt to practice sorcery, or say spells, i.e. who *act* like witches (even if their actions have no real effect), well then of course. Just ask a Wiccan :)
