As i said, i'm doing a science project on how cigerette smoke will affect a plant's growth. However that's not what i'm asking the question about. I was wondering if any one had an idea of some kind of plant that will grow in a few days or at least one week. I only have three weeks to finish the project and i need a name of a plant that will grow quickly. And it needs to be a name that i can find in a local plant store or stores that have plant sections in them. I appreciate any ideas.

Lima beans grow from seeds VERY quickly. What you are basically looking for is a large seed, such as corn, beans, etc. The large seed means the seed has a lot of food within, from which to grow fast.

If you want to use corn, it will grow straight up. Once three weeks hits with lima beans, the stems themselves are getting a bit spindly and may break with a lot of movement. I'm not sure how you're planning on getting it to school. If you get a ride, either will work. If you have to walk or take the bus, do corn.

Good luck! Hope it works out for you well!

Sunflower seed also germinate quickly. I got some at Walmart a week ago and they are already 2-3 inches high. I have the lights on 24/7 in the room they are in to help them grow. The kind I got are the ones that can grow 5-7 ft tall, might be called mammoth or something like that.

And though it seems like cigarette smoke would adversely effect them, it may not. They basically suck in carbon dioxide and send out oxygen.

Now there are some plants, like tomatoes, which can get a disease from the nicotine. This is why most people who have greenhouses will not let people smoke in them.

If you want to grow from seed, try mung beans. They are what you see as bean sprouts in the grocery stores and on Chinese foods.

You can buy packages of mung beans in many grocery stores. They are small green beans, but I have seen some in a reddish-brown colour as well..

They are the easiest thing possible to grow:

Put them in a tray of water, put the tray under a sink or other dark place, where they will not be disturbed and carry on with your day. The only thing you must do after that is keep them wet.

In two weeks you will have a good crop.

If you choose not to use them in your school project, or if you end up with too many, just add them to dinner.

Bean sprouts grow really fast. Most garden centers carry seeds this time of year, you should be able to find some. Grass seed grows quite quickly too, within a week you should have germination. Buy the fast growing kind. Good luck!

How are you going to get the cigarette smoke to the plants? Whoever is smoking, tell them that it is very dangerous to smoke cigarettes! I'm sure whichever plant gets exposed to the most smoke will grow the worst!!!
