I think some good ones would be Beauty and the Beast, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Seussical the Musical, or (if you can stand it) High School Musical. Fun ones like that. They're not too involved, they're familiar stories, and the music is upbeat and happy.
I know HSM is stretching it a little, but because it's so popular, I thought it couldn't hurt to mention it.

There are some really nice edited versions of Broadway shows, done for middle schoolers. www.broadwayjr.com has shows put out by MTI.

The scripts are cleaned up if necessary and shortened to make them managable and the music is keyed to their range.

Show kits include scripts and accompaniment music on cd and are very do-able.

Another company that is doing the same is Hal Leonard in cooperation with Rogers and Hammerstein.

I am currently producing and directing their Once Upon a Mattress version. It is very well done, the sex content is gone and the kids are enjoying it..

You can find these at: www.clarusmusic.com

You can also go around purchasing their shows if you call Rogers and Hammerstein directly and ask to rent. This is actually cheaper.

I also like anything Kathryn Shultz Miller puts out:

Do a comical spin on Macbeth. I recall doing something like that for my middle school play. For example, the mention of the knife in the play was attached to a fishing line, and as the person talked about it, the knife bounced around. So they changed the lines a little bit and added a part where he shouts at the knife to stop moving around. It was funny at the time, I guess any sort of comedy keeps their attention. Dramatic plays work well for this, because you can be TOO dramatic, and give comedy relief easily.

Musical performances are great for middle school. Something like Taming of the Shrew might be a good choice. Does your school have a choral group?

aladdin
romeo and juliette

it is illegal to do a play on something that is playing on Broadway, so no mary poppins, or anything else that is on there.

I don't condone it, but any junior production usually works, is about an hour, hour 20 max, and can be found for almost any musical
