My brother's teacher and the teacher's family offered to pay his entire college and law school expenses if he promised to become a prosecutor. My brother turned it down because he wants to be a public defender. Expenses include tuition, room and board, food, travel, and a month allowance. I keep telling my brother that he's making a very big mistake but he tells me he's making the best decision of this life. I just wnat to know what you think of it. Currently opinions between friends and family are split.

The offer acutlaly started as law school only. so my parents said fine we're not paying any law shcool expenses. Then the teacher upped it to college. But my parents can't say "we're not paying for college" but money is relaly tight with us.

Very dumb, but only cuz he's too young to know better.

Quite a few public defenders start off in the DA's office, only to move to the Public Defender's office (or private practice as criminal defense attorneys). They do this to gain experience from the side of the "enemy".

So, your bro could have gotten a free education, and then done what he wanted. I'm pretty confused as to who's offering what tho. Your family? His teacher? What teacher? What's the teacher's family got to do with anything? Is that even ethical for the teacher?

It is possibly just the way he feels. It's a lot easier to defend (a person, a point of view, an opinion) than it is to attack.

Think about it this way: If you had a person accused of a crime and you had no way to know if they had committed it or not, would you rather be the prosecutor who gets the person put in jail wrongly with the nagging doubt that maybe their defense team wasn't up to the job in court, or would you rather be the person defending them, with the idea that at least you did the best you could to defend them whatever the outcome?

Also, as i understand it public defenders are very thin on the ground in certain places. look at the situation in New Orleans. A handful of public defenders left to defend hundreds of cases.

I suppose at the end of the day, it's like the doctors who volunteer to go out with Medicine Sans Frontiers. They give their time, pay their own travel fare to help people who can't afford to help themselves. Those doctors could make a name for themselves becoming a brilliant surgeon, but they choose to help others instead.

And there's nothing that says your brother will stay a public defender forever. He could change his career path in the future.

It's your brothers life and his decision. If he feels his time would better be spent serving those who don't have the money for lawyers, then he's making the right decision. There are plenty of good student loans with reasonable interest rates if this is the direction your brother decides to go in and your parents can't afford it. Good for him for knowing what he wants to do with his life and going after it.

I don't know why he couldn't do both? Start out as agreed in the prosecutor field. After the terms of the contract are met, he can either stay or pursue his ideal dream with a wealth of knowledge on how the other side works!

I think that you should let your brother make his own mind on this, If it is a mistake he is the one who has to pay for it. And only he has to live with his choices in life. Just like you have your own choices. Just give your brother a hug tell him you love him and you hope for the best. Life is to short to worry about this.

I think that if that's what he wants, thats what he wants. it's his life and you can't do anything about it. You can try to convince him, but I'm afraid that's all you can do.

No offense to him, but I think that your bro is also making a mistake. Who doesn't want to have free room and board as well as tuition fully paid? Anyway, it's his decision ultimately.

Slaves are made in such ways...
if your brother is to be a man,
if your brother is possess his own soul,
if your brother is to breathe freely,
he must be himself.
