Yes it is possible to find a host family in India. There also things called Hospices and are very common, it is about the cheapest way to go.
You can find out at your nearest YMCA or through a college or university it's the easiest ways to get more info apart from your traditional Travel Agencies.

Got your mail, by host family I think you mean you want to stay as Paying Guest or PG as its called this is pretty common in many cities (dont know much about Bangalore though). Rents in major IT cities like Bangalore/Pune are pretty high. Many students/bachelors share rented apartments.
If you want to stay with a family PG is the best option, be careful as to which family you choose.
Lots of websites exist just search for india rentals on google, also try kijiji website for that particular city, best is local newspapers.
