The poem, like others of Frost's, looks at death.
The title, "Out, out," recalls Macbeth's cry, "Out, out, brief candle," on hearing of his wife's death. Death can be so sudden.
Alive and vital, and then suddenly gone.
There is regret, wishing the boy had stopped work sooner, thus avoiding the accident, unpredictable though it was.
In "Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening," Frost seems attracted to death, returning to his life as a matter of duty. In "Out, out," life is joyful and its loss regrettable.
Both poems are life-affirming in the end.
