I was always under the impression that the Pontiac trans AM was the halo sports car for GM. exceedingly shadowing the camaro. I then fully understood that the two consist the same basics as far as engines and designs go.So now....keeping that in mind, Which production model is the more potent overall???

They are quite literally identical twins. Choose the one you think looks better, I guess...

The Camaro is a more versatile performer...more engine options and aftermarket parts...Camaro especially the 69 SS or Z-28 has more of a identity..Firebird was basically a baby GTO until the Goat was killed off in the mid 70's...the Screaming Eagle was put on those hoods and Trans Am was born..."Smokey & The Bandit" made Firebirds popular but these cars are called show ponies by most muscleheads....the Camaro was lighter and could be customized in so many ways....I think the best Firebirds were ..the 67 convertibles..with a 400 or aftermarket 455...the 77 model and the 79/80 one...but Camaro looks good from 1967 to 2002...in my opinion, always looked better..The Kitt era Trans Am looks like a Corvette imposter...with those hideaway lights and near identical shaped rear end...The Firebird had the SLP Firehawk as it's crowning performance achievement...Camaro had the Baldwin Motion Camaros of the 60's , Ligenfelter and Calloway tuned models in the 90's/ early 2000's...Both can fit the same engines but I've seen very few Firebirds with aftermarket 502 or 540 engines...Camaros are usually chosen..we're talking about over 500 horses....without superchargers or turbochargers...even Nos...I've seen Camaros and Firebirds race several times with the same engines and transmissions...8 times out of 10, the Camaro wins.
The Halo car for GM has always been the Vette....all of the best technology , styling cues, and building materials are used on those models...Camaro is next in line because it's a Chevy, Firebird was like a 1st cousin...just as good but not better.

Interesting question...You have to ask yourself..Why is GM reproducing the new camaro in 2008...It will have the fluid lines of the late 60's model..Classic muscle car..GM has answered your question...Buy the way..The way you used the word POTENT..in your question..I'am assuming you mean horsepower..Gm devoloped many displacements for the camaro muscle cars of the late 60's and 70's...With out question...potent and camaro go hand in hand...(of coarse were not talking corvette here)..So go to some car shows this summer and look at all the horses camaro's will have..

The End

If your covering all the years. They both had there moments of one being better than the other. In the long run I think the Camaro won. One big thing is it seems the Firebird always weights more than the Camaro. And as mentioned there is talk of bring the Camaro back. It was stupid to kill the F bodies in the first place.Just to build more useless pickups and SUVs. I have to say as much as I hate to Ford at least got it right on that one.

I'm a Camaro guy all the way. I don't know which years you're talking about specifically but check out Thirdgen.org for all the info you'd ever need for 3rd generation Camaros and Firebirds

Here is the deal. These cars are IDENTICAL, except for cosmetics. The only thing different about these cars is the body. The engine/transmission/suspension is the same, and the quarter mile times are the same (provided the drivers are both skilled). Trans Am drivers will swear their cars are superior, Camaro drivers will swear their cars are superior, and realists will tell you they are the same car.

THE MOST POTENT TRANS-AM IS GOING TO BE WS-6. THE CAMARO IS THE SS. IT DEPEND WHICH ONE YOU LIKE THE LOOKS OF.

They are exactly the same. Only difference is minor appearance differences. Everything that counts is identical. Just depends on which one you think looks better.
