I was hoping someone with experience could give me an idea on what to charge as a Spanish tutor for a 6th grade student. I have seen rates anywhere from $20-65/hr. I have limited experience as a tutor, and while I am fluent (I use Spanish everyday for my job) I am not a native speaker, so I don't know what would be appropriate.

I am a teacher and the going rate is usually around $20.00 an hour. Most parents will not be able to afford much more than that and can hire a classmate for half that or even a 4th.

Because you do not have experience as a tutor I would charge $20.00. If you ask much more than that then you may be turned down.

Once you gain experience then you may want to ask for more.

The art of selling yourself can lead you in many directions.

Since you know who would like to pay you, just take what you know about them and come up with a good starting point. $35/hr?

Then take what you think they know about you, and adjust accordingly. If you're 50 with multiple degrees, $50/hr. If you're 21 and dress like a high school drop out, $20/hr. et cetera.

The flippant answer is that you should charge as much as they will pay. If you think they would counter your initial offer, start at $40/hr and go from there. Read up on negotiation (or ask another question here) for more specific advice.

As a Caltech student, I charged $30/hr to teach algebra & geometry.

Good luck.
