You have got to realize that the country was only about 65 years old at the start of the Civil War. So the results was critical for this country to carry on as the writers of the constitution meant it to be.
There were some real tough times as to the outcome of this war and Lincoln had to make many General changes throughout much of the 5 year war. Lincoln was not popular during much of this conflict and was criticized by many until America won the war. Sound familiar!!!!!
