Look into the risks of amniocentesis before you make a decision. personally, it scares me. i would see the genetic counselor first, and do lots of research to decide if the risks are worth it.
My aunt, while pregnant, was told that her son would have down syndrome. They suggested abortion. She prayed a lot, and gave birth to a very healthy (no down syndrome!) boy.
good luck to you! i know this has to be hard.

Amnio carries a risk of miscarriage, but can give you the answers you want.
When I was pregnant, I did not have the triple screen done because of the false positives it can give. Basically it will tell you if you carry the gene for abnormalities but that does not mean there will be anything wrong with the baby. My doctor had said that many times it makes people worry for no reason.
I also agree that the right question here is will the results of the amnio make a difference in whether you plan to continue this pregnancy? If it will not change anything, do you really need to have it done? I would talk to the counselor before making any decision.

Personally I wouldn't because through the job I do I've been lucky enough to meet a variety of people with all sorts of disabilities, who are wonderful people. I know the idea of having a child who is not 'normal' is horrible, but try to see past the idea of 'normal' because every person has value andf their own brilliant things to offer.

Imagine (as I'm sure you are) how you would feel if you had the amnio and discovered there was a problem... what a position to be in deciding whether the child's life is worthwhile or not based upon their disability.

I realise you must be feeling terrible and thinking all sorts of things.. I dont want to sound like I'm judging but I feel that nature should take its course and if your child is disabled it would not be the most terrible outcome, there would be so much more to their life and yours than you may expect.

I am 24, and had a positive AFP4. Upon further investigation it was found the test was done too early and everything was normal. I had an amnio just to be sure. If I need to care for a special needs child, I would probably want to prepare myself mentally. That said, alot of people have false positives on this test, I am told.

there is a chance of m/c after an amnio, I personally would not get it down, simply because having a downs child would not disappoint me or make me change my mind in any way about having the child. Goos luck with your decision.

dear pia,

having amniocentesis done is not the issue i guess, but if the amniocentesis will be abnormal... what will you do then ? carry the baby to term or have an abortion ?... i guess that is the question you should be asking...

Personally i would not have it done becasue of the risk of miscarriage, and that i would never abort anyway if it did come back that my baby had down's syndrome.

I would have it done. It is a really quick and almost painless procedure. I had one done but it was to check to see if my son's lungs were mature because i went into pre-term labor
