In 2005 Target firmed up their no solicitation policy by not allowing the Salvation Army bell ringers to stand outside the store. This angered a lot of people and led to a boycott. They felt that they shouldn't be making an exception for one group to solicit, it's unfair.

I worked at a Seattle Target that year, and in spite of that boycott, sales reached record levels in that store. I guess most people didn't really care, they cared more about sales. :)

On their behalf, Target does give a ton of money to charity, employees can donate to United way out of every paycheck, they gave to Hurricane Katrina relief, they give to schools.... Target is very much community minded and gives a lot of money. They just didn't allow the SA to stand outside. It's a one sided complaint.
