Well, some mayors, like Guiliani in New York, actually work to better their cities. And, in times of troubles (9/11) they get r done.
Others, like Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland, ran his city into the ground and bankrupt it.
Still others, like Nagin of New Orleans, sit on their butts and do nothing during a massive hurricane. Odd enough for a city built under sea level to flood!!!

Sorry, my city's mayor just irritates the day lights out of me.
He is a tree on every corner person - it is bankrupting us.
He is also in charge of
- long term planning
- carrying out programs
- executing laws
- enforcing regulations & policies
- appoint people to commissions & boards
- review county & city books
- attend all city board meeting
- negoitiate contracts ( ok, our mayor has been good at this & made the city a lot of money including pro hockey team thru 2034. - I still do not like him though)
Just a few of his duties.

The mayor here oversees the police department. Also sits in on meetings pertaining to city government.

what country are you in, as the UK mayors have a far different role than from what I have seen here in the USA.........
