There are two types of dance that is called Modern. In one case, Ballroom and Modern are synonyms and can be used interchangeably. There is a different style of dancing that is Modern Ballet that is often referred to as Modern. Before you give her advice double-check which Modern is she referring to. If you mean "modern" as simply opposite to "outdated" - below are a couple of links.

You can find a lot of Ballroom music samples (with an option to buy CDs) on http://www.ballroomdancers.com/Music/ and http://www.danceshopper.com/ballroom-dance-music-standard

Ballroom has pretty strict tempo requirements. The above websites have put that into consideration; these albums are owned by many ballroom studios and competition organizers. You can check the tempi on http://usistd.org//index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=39&Itemid=51

The reason they are using different types of music is because they are trying to reach a wider audience. As you already know, dance music is chosen by the timing that goes with the dance, not necessarily the type of music. I do believe that there are better choices that can be made then what is going on now. but I think that its amazing that they are introducing ballroom dancing to an audience that otherwise would never have been interested. Yes, a waltz should never be danced in 4/4 timing, but most of what they do on the show is more of a "showdance" anyway. Other than the waltz you mentioned, I believe that is good for people to think "outside of the box" in terms of music. It stimulates creativity in choreography. In shows like " so you think you can dance" they actually use music from up and coming musicians for the show in order to provide more opportunities to struggling musicians which I think is great as well.

Modern Ballroom relates to modern artists.
Shenia Twain is often played for a cha-cha (party for two)
Celine Dion or Madona are often played for a Jive (I'm alive)
Micheal Jackson for a cha-cha (Billy Jean)
Sex on the Beach (for a merengue)
