I am looking into renting an apartment that has shared utilities, water, trash , gas, etc , These are not that bad because it is a set fee of 25 dollars a month but my concern is the Electric bill, the landlady said I share that bill with my neigbor upstairs, she said it is divided acording to how many people live in the apartments and square footage but my problem is... I don't want my bill to be high so I will make sure my lights are off and I don't turn on the AC, but what if my neighbor likes to waste electricity? or how does it work? if you had this situation before I would like to hear from you. Well, I just want your opinions, I never rented anything like this. I live in California so my bill is usually 70 dlls a month and I don't even have a washer and drier or a dishwasher! and I cook with gas!!. This new place has an electric stove !!!!, so I am freaked out about this bill.

You are right to be freaking!! THis is just about the most sure recipe for getting gouged. They will of course use more than you. They will pay late, but not you. They will use all of the hot water as though there are 5 lining up to shower one by one all morning.

Do yourself a favor and search on Yahoo Q's something about shared utils. There are people on here at least once a week trying to figure out how to get out of the horrible mess they are in over shared utilities. Just pass on this apt.

Tell the land lady that you'll agree to a set rate paid directly to her. In writing please, that you will owe nothing more. Let her duke it out with them. But that still may leave you with no hot water so look into that first.

Best of luck,

Why not get LL to install a smart meter on each unit and divy up the bill based on actual consumption. Ah Ha!

do not do it, you will have no control over how much electricity is used, but yet you will be liable for a part of the bill bad deal
