I have a sister who had to take on a divorce from here husband last year, after the divorce she was able to drop her ex's last name and return to her maiden name...she's the one that had told me about this site...you can print up a name change form to fill out and send to your local court system, it is usually a pretty simple process...if this form doesn't help in your locale, go ahead and read about the process of changing your name at this site...keep in mind, this process of changing names isn't free anywhere in the country...But didn't cost my sister an arm 'n leg to get her name changed...Good Luck!

If you are an adult, you can file with the courts for a legal name change. You can also just add a name on anything not legal.
When my brother was murdered, we discovered his middle name had been left off his birth certificate by my aunt. She said she did not like his middle name that my parents gave him - how funny is that!

If you want to change or add to your name outside of marriage or adoption, you must petition the court. The court's role is to make sure you are changing your name for a valid reason.

Once the court approves your petition, you now have the necessary proof you have legally changed your name to update all of your vital records like a drivers license, passport, social security card, bank records or employment records.

To get a social security Name Change, you must first obtain a legal Name Change, and then send the paperwork to the social security office, to obtain a new card.
