The cell membrane is formed by a double layer of phospholipids. They have a hydrophilic head, which points towards the water inside and outside the cell, and a hydrophobic tail which point towards the center of the double layer which contains no water. They consist of two fatty acids and a phosphate group linked to glycerol.
