They die off in the cold. Most flies must find a heat source in the winter to live and continue to reproduce in cycle. Some larvae can remain dormant. But, most gnats and other flies lay their eggs in things like dead mice or animal feces or organic garbage. In the winter, they stay above rising heat sources, such as in the attics of humans' homes. When the organic matter in which they lay their eggs has been all consumed or if the heat is turned off in the house, the gnats die.

Actually, I believe that most insects die during the winter. They lay eggs that hatch in the spring.

They are either dead or frozen ( which are almost the same thing...)
