HB is wrong. Writing a short story is not easier than writing a novel, its just different.

Are you sure the story is ready to be published? Has it been editited to death, and they gone over again? Are all the spelling errors, tense errors, point of view errors, and grammar errors changed or removed? Does the story flow, keeping the reader glued to the page?

Go to a list of magazines and e-zines. There are a lot of them. Select one that will pay you at least in copies. Some e-zine's will not, and if you only want to get your story out there, go with it. BUT remember that once its published, you can no longer sell the first North American or World rights as most publications want. You can try to re-sell the story as a reprint later.

You can get publications by genre (put the type of story it is in the search engine, then check out what comes up). You can subscribe to WritersMarket.com (yearly charge, very reasonable if you plan on using it a lot).

There are so many magazines out there its really difficult to pin it down to a few.

I would be happy to help you more if you want to contact me private. Email here or on my website.

Most new writers start with the short story. It’s a lot easier to write 10 or 15 pages than it is to write an entire novel. Short stories are a good way to practice the craft. It’s also easier to get stories published. There are hundreds upon hundreds of venues that publish short stories--you just have to know where to start.

There are magazines that buy shorts. For mystery stories, there's Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. For science fiction and fantasy, there's Analog and Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. Do a Google for any of these magazines and they'll give you a web site and submission requirements. Most of them pay by the word.
