Well, why not? I'm 44 and it has been used as a classic literary work in school here since before my time. 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' should not be banned from schools. Efforts to ban then books are an insult to the intellect of students, who are expected to maintain their studies and function in a high-school environment, yet are not trusted to draw their own conclusions about a novel. While the school system may wish to 'protect' students from the ideas expressed in this book, this 'holier than thou' crusade will succeed only in accelerating the decay of what little free thought students have left. Why else are we here but to learn? How long is it until even the voice of Bradbury and his great work 'Fahrenheit 451' are silenced?
Lots of controversy surrounds this novel due to the excessive use of the N-word. If a single book is going to be condemned because of a bad word, they may as well remove all books from the curriculum. The truth is, these books are historically accurate in the environment setup, and in order to show our history we must show the truth, and the truth is ugly.
I'm truly sick of all this "race card" playing. Funny, if a Black Person says "the N word" it's endearing and cute... But, if a white person uses it, it's slanderous. It's time to end the double standards that PERPETUATE racism.

yes. The "n" word was what was spoken those days. The main character and the slave help each other out. Despite the use of the word, the characters actually show up the racial system.
Some say Mark Twain didn't do enough. But, hell, it was the 1800's. He was pretty revolutionary for the time. Look at it in that perspective if the frequent use of the "n" word starts to bother you. Think of it as a history lesson (even though it is fictional) when you're reading it if that helps.
In a few days you'll be through with the book! You'll never have to read or talk about it again if you don't want to! But it is an American classic and one word isn't going to change that.

I'm a little confused as to why you're asking this because you gave no indication as to where you stand on the book. It is a piece of literature that has racial slurs in it due to the time it was written. I do not believe it promotes racism and also I do not believe in banning books. Shakespeare's a lot more 'racy' than Huck Finn by a long shot. Have you read Romeo and Juliet yet???? Incest, teen sex etc. Should that be banned too?

OMG im reading that right now and weve been debating that in class and weve come to the decision that yes it should be taught in public schools.
Mark Twain is not using racism in this book. He is using satire which is like showing how stupid white people were to make fun of black people.
Basically yes it should be taught - there is nothing wrong with this novel. It is just misinterpreted a lot

i read it in school, i dont remember what lessons it may have taught me, but it was a good book, and got me interested in reading more of twains stuff. It should be mandatory just because it has been banned, and that would be a good thing to teach is that censorship is wrong for the reasons given.

Yes, it's not as bad as people say it is "just because of the language." And you can learn from it. What can you learn? Go to class and you'll figure it out. The language it uses and what is in there is in there to make a statement about the world in Twain's time. It's good to learn these things.

definitely.
yes, the book uses the "n" word, which was common during the time period in which the book was written. But, really, the book is the BEST book in American literature to show the beauty of friendship and how "not judging a book by its cover" is so important.
