I live in California, have taken the California bar and plan to take IL next. I am wondering what good review programs there are out there. I'm reluctant to take BarBri because I know that in CA, at least, they do not spend much time teaching you how to write essays. And I'm not crazy about their seminar style approach. Ideally I'd like to do something at home so that I can study while I am still in CA. Any suggestions? Or, if you took BarBri and loved it, I'd like to hear that too.

BarBri is just ok. It's certainly not spectacular, but it's sufficient. Since it's just about passing, sufficient works. I looked at the other ones and no other course stood out to me. BarBri was convenient, so that's what I took (offered classes at my law school).

I'd recommend a seminar class if possible, even if you don't like it. BarBri managed to condense a semester (or even a year) of law school lessons into that tiny amount of time. However, the primary benefit, like I said in the other place you asked, is that it forces you to study at a certain speed.

Studying for the bar is like a marathon, as you know. It's easy to get distracted. Whether you do BarBri or not, being forced to go to class and be prepared helps you keep focus for that long period of time.

However, you may not have a chance to do that if you're not living in Illinois. I know BarBri offers self study courses. Since I didn't think they were that special, you can consider all the other review courses out there. Just look for one that may have some kind of guarantee if you don't pass.
