A multi-cultural society is one in which people from different ethnic and cultural origins can be found living together in one place.
The US is a multi-cultural society. We have many different ethnic groups from many different countries, all living here, practicing their cultural heritage...ie Chinese New Year, Kwanza, St. Patricks Day....all living together in this one country.
Communication is essential to this kind of multiplicity. With so many different beliefs, there i a great risk of being misunderstood because cultural differences translate in different ways. An innocent remark from a white person can be a true statement of hatred to an asain person. Communicating effectively can let both parties understand, the one to say it differently, the other to understand the intent, if not the words.

Multicultural in itself is its definition. Its a society (a group of people) who have it its make up three or more people from different cultures. Applying sophisticated definitions only confuse the definition. Communication is a key as to whether that society can live in harmony. Being able to communicate ones culture to others establishes standards for the group. At the same time communicating ones acceptance of other cultures (both verbal and non-verbal communications) allows others to live at peace with honor and respect. Lack of communication can lead to paranoia, segregation and even violence in a multicultural society.

There is definitely a solid place for proper use of traditional communication...even in multi-cultural countries...
However; there is no excuse for dumbing-down language because someone is too lazy to use the proper words or language elements when they speak or write.
You can appreciate the many cultures even more when communication is based on a single language. If you wish to maintain conflict and misunderstanding...just keep 2-3 languages, or bastardization of the major language, in vogue.
The attempt to spread Ebonics was a farce. Embarrassing for even a multi-cultural society.

A multicultural society is one that is doomed to fail. The U.S. is slipping toward a multicultural society (i.e. the recent immigrants practice the culture of the countries they left and fail to assimilate or adopt an "American" culture).
A muti-ethnic, multi-national society can be truly great (witness the 19th & 20th century immigration to the U.S.). The difference then was that immigrants embraced the American culture.
My question to those who practice an other-than-American culture: If the place you left was superior to the U.S., then why did you come here?

as long as there are people of different races living without the law's racial prejudices, it's multi-cultural.
as long as they can be understood verbally or with sign language, there's enough communication. They can vote on what they want when they get citizenships. no offense.
