If it's a desktop and you have available PCI Slots, you can add a Ethernet network card. They are very cheap, easy to install and configure. You can find how to manuals on the web easy.

If it's a laptop, some older ones had PCI slots for expansion as well and you can still get expansion cards for older laptops on E-Bay

Yes. There are a few options. The easiest is to head down to a Best Buy type store and ask for a "Usb to Ethernet" adapter. You can also get a PCI Ethernet card and install it, but that would require opening the case.

Buy a new one. The cost of an upgrade would cost you more than a brand new computer. A new computer, even the cheapest one, would amaze you with their power and performance and you'll have all the ports you need for DSL, cable you name it and wireless too. Get one with Vista. It's really nice and the security on them is excellent. Don't even need Norton.

Don't even think of upgrading. More problems than its worth. Treat yourself to a new Vista system.

If your PC doesnt have an onboard network plug, you need to buy a PCI ethernet adapter. They're pretty cheap, especially on ebay, and easy to install even for a novice. Just make sure you take all precautions to avoid Electro-Static Discharge, the most important being make sure the PC is off before you attempt to work on it. Also make sure you are well grounded, preferably touching metal. I always just make sure my arm is resting on the metal frame of the tower itself, provided that the tower is grounded.

You need a net card. Try Linksys@ Best Buy or something. As long as your op system is 98 or newer!
