Abraham Lincoln's nationality was American as in born in the United States of America. His ancestry was English. The name Abraham is in the bible and many men and women were given biblical names during that century Christian's and Jews.
When it comes to his causing the war the political gap grew long before Abraham Lincoln became President and could only have been avoided if either political side had decided to concede to the other. Since those who wanted slavery were not going to give in, and Abolitionists were not going to give in, it was a stalement.
His first nomination to office of president was 1860 which was the year he was elected he did not keep trying to run for president since he won the first time he was nominated and then won again for a second term.
He did not personally bring this country to war in fact the war was started by the Confederacy, as a result of the growing difference in the leading political parties of the time.

I'm not sure what controversies you are looking for. Abraham is a Biblical name. Their family read the Bible constantly. Lincoln is probably English or European, not sure. He is self taught, didn't go to school but taught himself law and became a lawyer. Read everything he could get his hands on and was very knowledgeable about most things. Most historians would consider him a genius in keeping the nation together during one of the worst times of American history.
Trauma? His mother died when he was nine. Lost a true love when he was living in New Salem at around the age of 22. But losing loved ones is not uncommon during those times.
Lincoln ran for US Congressman and lost several times, but did win. He ran for president once and won, of course.
I think he is one of the greatest Presidents to have ever shared this land with us. You should definitely read more about him.

Abraham Lincoln was born in the USA. Instead of asking what his nationality is I think you meant to ask what ethnic group he came from. For Abraham Lincoln to be Jewish, his mother Nancy Hanks would have been Jewish. (I don't know if she was.)
His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks.
It was not unusual for religious Christians to name their children after Old Testament names.
I think you may need to do your own reading on him to come up with more information. If you do a simple search on yahoo.com you can come up with a lot of information on Abraham Lincoln.
He had plenty of trauma, and desire, from what I know from reading about him.

Most names in the bible are Jewish ,like Jesus Mordecai David etc.Everybody who runs for president doesn't necessarily want it.He did not, his wife did. He was Caucasian. He had a stepmother He adored. He came from a simple backwoods family honest but very poor.He did not want the Civil War,he did at one time own slaves. He was like most good men of the times conflicted by the reality of slavery and the need for individual freedom for all.Africans were the first seller of slaves to England then to the colonies.Life at his time was controversial just like now Read.more about him reconstruction would have been easier had he lived. In his place we got a cruel drunk,U. Grant

from what I understand his ethnic background is Welsh, not English. Though both of those may seem almost identical to someone who is not familiar with the UK. Welsh people are sure to remind anyone who makes that mistake that the Welsh are part of Britain, but not English. (same as with Scotland). And the English are quick to poke fun at the Welsh as 'those short dark haired people with funny names'.
