.If the oil hasnt been changed in a long time or there is no oil left in it, it sounds like your talking about the sound an engine makes before it throws a rod, in other words the engine is shot. Your looking @ replacing the whole engine. This is what happens:
It means the connecting rod between the crank shaft and the piston has broken.

Worst case scenairo. Rod has gond through the engine. Engine is definitely junk

Possible worse case: The engine cylinders have been scraped up and damaged beyond repair. You won't know this unless you take the engine apart. Engine is junk

Rod broke but did no damage to cylinder walls. Replace rod, recommend a complete engine rebuild if your taking it this far. Very expensive.

I recommend simply getting a replacement engine or a junk yard engine and placing it in the car instead of dealing with the thrown rod. Too many unknowns and it will be expensive to take it apart to determine if it's even worth fixing.

nicely beacue there's no thank you to make certain what form of vehicle you have i visit attempt to grant you some factors to learn. assuming that it is probally a small engine 4 or 6 cylinder. first examine your oil and make certain whether that's on the right point, next examine that your oil isn't BLACK indincating that it might neeed a transformation. Your valve prepare is in the area which you discribed and there will be some noise from this are, we are assuming that it is louder and noiser than usual. while the automobile is first started the valve prepare is lacking oil, if the noise is going away in the 1st minute or so after the automobile is started it ought to be seen usual. it is by technique of the fact it takes some seconds for the oil pump to push oil as much as that area. Now whether that's something that keeps after the automobile has been working for a while then you definately have a plugged oil passage, this might ensue if the oil has no longer been replaced on a frequently happening era. in case you let us know what form of vehicle and engine and whether that's a gas or deisel eng that ought to help. whether that's a deisel then it's going to be noisey, it is usual. sturdy success!!

OK, as suggested - put oil in the engine. If it had run dry it would have already seized up and stopped. The Ztech engine had, prior to 1998- hydraulic valve lifters. These type of lifters get sticky, and noisy if proper care is not given to oil changes, because they depend on clean oil to function properly.

Suggestion: Get a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil and add about 1/2 to the crankcase, being careful not to overfill the engine. Then run the car for a day or so, and see if the noisyness improves. If it does, then get a can of Wynn's Motor cleaner and add that to the crankcase, run it according to the instruction on the can, then change the oil. Put the other 1/2 of the Marvel Mystery Oli in, add fresh oil and it should get much quieter,

First of all, put oil in it before you ruin it if it isn't already. It is probably the lifters for the valves rattling due to lack of oil. This is something you don't want to heard coming from your engine as once you stick a valve the piston can smash into it thus rendering your engine useless. You can also ruin the bearings, cylinder walls oil pump and so on.

Put plenty oil in and run it. If it is still knocking & rattling you h ave major engine problems. You will need to get another car, or spend big bucks to repair the old one!

I'd fill it with oil. Sounds like the main bearings. Drive it until it quits.
