When are you called rich - over $1 million income. I know in NYC $100,000 seems like not a lot but here in Montana - Wow.

To most of us here in SC, $100,000 is almost more than I know how to type. I was going to say something else but when I got to that figure I spent so much time on it, I forgot what I was going to say.

good question- basically the idea of shrinking middle class is you see homes that poor people put on 40 yr mortgage or an ARM and the homes that they cant get into because the affluent own and afford them and even with maximum credit and likelihood of forclosure they cant get into the house. From that the notion of a group of individuals between these two classes is the middle class thats the shrinking middle class. For example a nurse makes around 47k or so with two married would you say they are an affluent couple.

I would love to know what people think is upper income or affluent. I know what the census says but I believe those in upper income brackets still call themselves "upper middle class".

The national average income is around $45,000. Since that is the average nationwide I guess you could call that middle class. You have a valid point though. $45,000 a year in Montana will take you much further than $45,000 in New York or LA.

it depends on where you live. In S. Cal, $100k is called middle class survival level, especially if you have a mortgage!

Middle Class is around $30,000-150,000 per year as a family. It goes up every year with inflation.

No, not any more. I would say affluant carries some power along with the money. That is at least 5000,000 a year maybe more.
