It seems like people try to comfort people who are going through difficult times in their lives by saying everything happens for a reason. Do you think that is true, or is it just something people say to make others feel better about what is going on in their lives?

it's definately true, its hard to see when you're in the difficult time. but once you're out the other side, you can then realise what it is that you learnt.

i went through a hard time and it pretty much ended today, and i must admit as bad as i felt through it, i have learnt more than i have in a long time about myself, how to treat other people and about life in general.

I now know how to do things in the future, and have become a stronger person for it.

Stick it through, and once you're out the other side, you'll realise it did happen for a reason. to make you a better person!!

Well, throughout my life, people have always used that cliche. But, here is my 2 cents worth.

I don't necessarly think EVERYTHING happens for a reason...like the genius said in a post here, she did not pick her as part of some sublime plan, but - I do think that things tend to work themselves out, and generally for the best. Then, in retrospect, it is real easy to say, "there must have been a reason for that, and I am glad for it."

As a Christian I know things do happen for a reason..
When something bad happens to me, no matter what it is, God always opens another door and I get wonderful blessings from the disasters. So, yes, things do happen for a reason...
We don't understand it at the time but a revelation is not far away....

No, I don't.
I'm pretty sure I didn't pick my nose this morning for a reason other than the obvious.
If we lived life believing that it's all up to fate, we'd never get off our butts and do something for ourselves. It'd also be really easy to sit by and watch others suffer - it'll all work out in the end, right?
Nope, there's a lotta chance but no fate.

Sure, there's a reason for everything, but I don't think everything is divinely inspired, or God's will, or whatever you want to call it. Sometimes it's just the result of some sick psycho's depravity.
