I should have payed more attention to the forensic shows. I have seen them do it.

I wonder if you held it over steam a foot or more away and rewound it ?? Do you think that might work. Call a video store that might do copies, and ask them if they have any special method for repairing tapes.

physically, are they messed up? If they aren't torn or rolled up you should be able to play them. The heads of the player need to touch the flattened and unbroken top of the tape. If the tape is all unrolled, you may need to open the cassette casing and try to straighten things out. This will not be easy. Unless this is something that isn;t available digitally, I'd just look for the CD or download. If the physical condition is okay, the tapes may have lost their signal. Have you tried more than one player? Unfortunately tape-eating players are rare but it does happen - one of the benefits of making the leap to digital.

Throw them away. Get new ones cause they're cheap.
