They do the same things the rest of us do--raise children, cook food, go to work, make love, party, become Soccer Moms and Dads, then shower and get up and do it all over again.
I lived in Anchorage and Kenai for about 4 years and never expected to live in an igloo, or any of the other stereotypes. Maybe you aren't speaking with the right people?
Shh! Don't tell them stereotypes are untrue, or it will turn Alaska into another California!
I'd give anything to go back up there. It was absolutely the best place I ever lived, and I've been to 38 of the 50 states.

I think Alaska is beautiful. However, being from the (erm...) second largest state I wouldn't want to live there because I don't do cold very well and like the length of my days and nights to be more consistent.

My wife's great grandfather was the first white child born in the Alaskan territory. Jack London was his godfather.

That being said, I love the art of the native Alaskan people and there is much to be said for a less materialistic lifestyle (although it's not for me).

Most of the cities I visited when I did a cruise down the inside passage were pretty much like most cities that I have visited elsewhere. I suspect that you have access to and do pretty much the same sort of things that we folks in the lower 48 do.

I think you guys probably have jobs like we all do, go to school, and go out and have fun. I don't know how things are over there and I think this is why people don't understand. It's so far away from the mainland that it can sometimes seem like a different country. I think some stereotype because they see the national geographic channel in which indigenous people fish and hunt and that sort of stuff but I bet that in the towns and cities things are as normal as in any mainland town or city....but maybe just a bit more cold lol.

I have no stereotypes of Alaska...I mean I live in southern Canada and have spoken to people in Vermont just an hour away by car and they think we live in Igloos..yeah there are some dubmasses out there. I've never been to alaska however here down south, we live our lives..so I assume thats what you do there. Either you buy food, watch tv..drive your car, whatever it takes. You live your day. Obviouseley its a different lifestyle given your shorter summers and colder winters, but technology is the same to my understanding. And yes summer down where I live in 90 degrees + for about 3 months and in florida, usa ,its all year round.
Now get back in your igloo and go ice fishing....Just kidding.
As a matter of fact, I saw pics of anchorage and its a big, big city with suburbs and everything.

I've always wanted to visit Alaska--in the summertime, of course. I am acquainted to some people who have been there, and they loved it. I also knew someone who lived there, but they had to leave as they said it was too expensive to live there.

I wouldn't want to be there in the winter due to all those hours of darkness, and all the times one might get snowed in. Any other season, though, I'd love to tour our last wilderness.

P.S. I do not think that Alaska is at all primitive--not in this day and age.

I assumed that Alaskans did what others in the other states do such as, dredge through their boring day doing much to nothing sitting in a cubical answering stupid people's phonecalls all day then enjoying tv after getting home from work. Oh! I forgot lunch, they enjoy eating microwave dinners while enjoying a cigarette.
