A lot of women wear thongs (because it avoids embarrassing panty lines), and most of them don't get infections. Change your thong every day, and wear clean pants (since more of the fabric is touching your skin with the lower coverage of a thong), and you should be fine.

If you get an infection, it's most likely a urinary tract infection (UTI), which is very minor. You'll get antibiotics and it'll be over. General good hygiene will prevent the problem. UTIs occur for a lot of reasons. You're supposed to urinate and clean after sex, not hold your pee for too long if you need to go to the bathroom, and not use soap anywhere "down there" that hair doesn't grow (because the soap kills the good bacteria that usually kills the bad bacteria).

The biggest problem with thongs is just getting used to wearing them at first, but once you're used to it, it isn't any different than other underwear.
