I have tried to pull the yarn tighter while I knit but it doesn't make them any tighter? I used a very thick yarn and it seemed a little more tight. Also does anyone know where to get patters I can use to possibly put designs on the hats for example hearts or stars?

The knit stitch used on a knitting loom doesn't have quite the same elasticity as the kind you'd knit with needles. That's one reason it seems a little loose. Try making the hat 1-3 stitches smaller next time you make one.

To knit a pattern into something, first draw the shape you want on graph paper -- or cut it out of paper and trace it onto the graph paper. Count each square as a stitch. Color the inside of your shape if it helps you see it better. Now you can see how many stitches you'll need to do in a different stitch or different color on each row to make your pattern.

Of course, you could always check the knifty knitter website for patterns for shapes and things, too. They probably have some available.

Hi:

You are suppose to wash them in a washing machine before putting them on. What this does is to shrink the yarn a bit more so it will tighten them up. If you have done this and the hat still loose than try knitting the yard closer by removing one knit and reknitting to the next one to make the hat silghtly smaller and hopely it will stretch itself to the right tightness. on the next hat you make.

the reason hats are loose on the knifty knitter is probably because the pegs are far apart.
