We bought a floor model computer from best buy. For some reason it is not letting us down load any programs or have access to and gives us an error message of that we do not have access due to the fact we are not the administrator. We have even tried to get the computer in safe mode by tapping or pressing the f10(its f10 on our 2003 windows xp media editon) button does not work. We've also tried logging in as admin but it also doesn't work. It says kiosk on the username for log in and the password is not recognizalble. Best buy won't help unless we take it in. Please help! :(

If it's simply a windows login issue uou should be able to reset the user accounts in safe mode. If your F10 or F8 button doesn't do the trick, you can check off safemode in the boot.ini
(run msconfig / goto the boot.ini tab)....you'll have to uncheck it for normal startup afterwards

If it's just a windows login then all you'll need to do is reset the user accounts. If it's a login prompt coming from the bios and not related to windows then you need to reset that manually. Either pull the battery on the motherboard for a few minutes or research which jumper settings will rest the cmos.

If all else fails then you could bring it to bestbuy....It's a hassle for sure but I suppose they don't want to give any help over the phone because they don't want people walking in the store and resetting the user premissions on all the floor models. I guess they treat the user accounts as some top secret info or something

My best advice to you is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the Operating system this will give you a fresh start and wipe out anything Best Buy installed or loaded on the PC.

Most store bought PC's have a suto recovery Disk but even that has a lot of crap applications you probably will never use..

Get a copy of XP or whatever and follw the steps to install it... You also may want to make sure you have a list of all the harware in the pc just incase you need to locat the appropriate device drivers.

Good Luck!!!

Take out the operating system CD (included with the computer). Then insert it. Restart the computer and then press a key when it tells you to. Then reinstall Windows XP. The disk will give you instructions.

Note: This will delete everything on the selected hard drive. To get them back, just try to download them from the internet after it's setup (yes, you'll need to set that up) or use any disks that have the program on it.

Good luck!

When you first turn your computer on, if you go to the logon screen in windows xp, it will be blue with the option of selecting which account to open, press ctrl + alt + del, this will open the login options, type in "administrator" in username there shouldn't be a password, leave it blank, this will log you in as the administrator.

If that doesn't work... try going to control panel, open "user accounts" and make sure that your account isn't limited that you are the computer administrator.

If you have the OEM disks of all operating system, I would suggest formatting the drive and reinstalling the entire operating system as it sounds like you have a computer the BestBuy used as a floor model and know knows what abuse it has gone through from all the customers in the store.

Now you have learned what I already knew from experience with Best Buy. They have inadequate service. They even have the nerve to charge steeply for their "service". If I were you I would get on Answers, and start searching in the green box above - the users here have a wealth of information and the biggest challenge is getting the right words into the search phrase. Your guess is as good as mine as to how to start searching.

Perhaps you can get into safe mode by go to start>Run and type in msconfig and hitting enter. Click on boot.ini and put a check mark in safe mode in boot options.

There is some software that will allow you to reset a password buts its a little geeky. read the instructions carefully.

I think if you go to start menu, then control panel, then user accounts, then create a new account, possibly set you & your husband as administrators. You will both need passwords. I hope that helps. If there are user accounts on there, change them.

Try to restore the operating system on the computer and then create one account as Administrator and make it the master account, if you're still having problems, E-Mail me back at need_to_live6@yahoo.com
