The only thing I can think of is that there could be another jumper setting you might have overlooked. Master, Slave and Cable Select (CS) are the normal ones you always see. However, some hard drives have a 4th one called "Single Drive". This would be applicable when you don't have another IDE device (hard drive or CD ROM) attached to the other port on the IDE cable. In this case, if you select Master, then it will not work (unless you hook up a slave to it too). So if you don't have another IDE device on the same cable, make sure your hard drive doesn't have this Single Drive jumper setting.

You will probably never use the Cable Select drive, so that is the last thing to try.

If you have another IDE device on the same cable, then make sure one drive is set as Master and one as Slave (doesn't matter which).

Last, go into CMOS setup and make sure its set to Auto Detect hard drives, and not set on Disabled or something.

You have not put enough info on here. I first would make sure PIN 1 is connect correctly and the power supply is tight. Next, if that doesn't work, make sure the CD-ROM or floppy device is set to master. Then set the harddrive to slave.

That is all that needs to be done. Then if you need to, you can boot the machine using a boot disk.

1) You need to see if in the BIOS if it needs to look for more than 1 Hard drive. Secondary Enabled..etc

2) You could have blown it up in transport in static shock.

try putting it in the freezer in a ziploc bag, then hook it up as cold as possible, sounds like a bad drive. Hooking it up cold allows for data recovery.
