If you are in word program, then you go to the insert tab. Then click on insert symbol. Select the appropriate symbol (you may have to scan through different fonts to find a font that has that symbol), then you just click insert. Then you can cut and paste that symbol to other documents or places in the document (as long as you don't edit select all and change all the font, which will make your symbol change into a regular font character).

In MS word you can go to Insert/Symbol and then pick it from a list.
You can also goto the character map under accessories/system tools and find the symbol you want and cut and paste it into whatever you like. Like this 25°F. You can also click and drag the characters over to your work with some programs. Or you can find the unicode that you need when you press and hold the alt key and use the number pad as stated before.

start>programs>accessories> system tools >character map
From here choose the font that you are working with (typically arial). Find the degree symbol. Single left click - look at the lower left to find the "keystroke".
If you are using a keyboard (i.e. laptop) that does not have a separate num keypad, you have to toggle the "num lock" or "num lk" - then to use the "num pad" (look for blue numbers around the letters U,I,O area). To use these numbers, HOLD down the "FN" key (usually by the space bar) and hit the number needed.
For instance for the degree symbol - it says "alt - 0176"... "num lk" > HOLD DOWN "FN" and "ALT" together > then press the blue numbers "0176" - Don't forget to turn off "num lk" when youre done.
The Character Map is very useful for other characters needed as well.

You can go through the fonts loaded on your computer until you find the degree mark º, this one was found in the Bookman Old Style font.

most word processing software has a symbol insert option. in microsoft word, it's insert, symbol, then you can scroll through several different menus....a lot of the programs also allow you to designate keyboard keys for that symbol Jaclyn - i tried it and the number 4 popped up as soon as i let go of the alt button......
