What is an Electicity Co-op and what are the benefits?

when someone is generating their own power, they can sell it to others. sooo... say there are a bunch of folks and some are generating power sometimes, others too at different times, and others not. they could all pool together and pay a set fee to have power all the time, through setting up a grid so that power was being generated all the time by someone, and everyone would have power all the time. they would be co-op ing. this is the simple version, of course.
