The "maintenance needed" light blinks for about 30 seconds after turning the car on, does this mean the car needs maintanence or does it always just blink for 30 seconds. Its a 2003 Honda civic?
Car runs good too.

I have an '03 Civic Hybrid... usually this means it thinks it's almost due for an oil change/routine maintenance... no big deal. Probably in about another 500 miles, the light will stay on everytime you turn your car on, until you take it in and they turn it off.

The service light is slaved into just about every system on the engine so second guessing it is futile. You should be able to download a trouble code with the correct key or diagnostic unit. You can often get those on loan at most package parts stores; i.e., NAPA, Autozone, Advance Auto. I'm tempted to second your guess of the catalytic converter. The symptoms you describe are typical of one that is blocked. You can get a generic universal type off the shelf for around a hundred, or go dealer and pay several times that amount but have the specific application for your car. However, you could have a dead cylinder for any of several reasons. I would do the trouble code download before doing anything.

Go to the Honda dealer and they will plug their diagnostic equipment to your outlet under the dash. Your on board computer store codes that their equipment will display. The fault will be identified. These days the on boards store every part on the car. I'm a worry wart myself plus an Obsessive Compulsive. I need to know exactly what's happening all the time!

If it doesn't stay on, it's just part of the normal diagnostics.

If you are truly in doubt, read the owners manual.
