Does it matter how much it sells for or whether or not it is a textbook? Is it an environmental or social issue?

Purchasing a used book is just what it says it is.... Purchasing a used book. Nothing is immoral about it. You shouldn't read things into it.

As an environmental issue, it is marginal. Not many trees saved or lost. As a social issue, we have had used-book stores for 100 or 200 years. I discovered them in Chicago at the age of 15 in 1952. No one was complaining. Only now, when the internet offers the possibility of reselling used books endlessly, do rent-seekers appear. Rent-seekers are not apartment landlords, but people who want to be paid for something that they have a tenuous claim to own. In other venues, the word is "stake-holder."

Why would it be immoral? it is immoral to dump a book or give it away. Purchasing a book, either it is new or used, it's the best thing to do. It is good for both social and environmental aspects.

Moral... saved a tree, kept more oxygen in the air, helped the enviroment, helps the economy since many small businesses use this as means of income.

There are many books that are sold as "used" when they are really just the books that didn't sell.

This whole process is put into the original cost of the book which is partly why a simple paperback is so expensive.

It's neither moral or immoral...it's simply doing nature good to purchase a used book. It saves our environment and saves a tree. We need all the trees saved we can. They produce oxygen for breathing and every tree we save, saves more for our children.

Think of it this way. In this day of modern technology, how will the future peoples of this planet think of us when there are no trees left on the planet. Or think of this as an excuse of college professors to get their students to use their minds and imaginations to figure out definitive answers on their own.
