If you are a mother/father of twins, do twins run in your family. I've read that they usually skip a generation, but is that a myth, and is it just a gamble. Thanks.

Fraternal twins are the only type of twins that have anything to do with genetics and that runs on the MOTHER's side. Identical twins are luck of the draw. Genetics do not play a role in producing identical twins.

i had twins, my grandmother is a twin. but was told by my doctor that's probably one of the most widely perpetuated myths about multiples. some families do seem to have a preponderance of multiple births, it's often more than a coincidence than a connection.

the factors that influence multiple birth, there is only one that could be identified as genetic or explained by family history: hyper ovulation. hyper ovulation is the tendency to release multiple eggs during ovulation, increasing the chances of conceiving dizygotic (or fraternal) twins. so, in families where the women have a gene for hyper ovulation, genetics would sufficiently explain an increased presence of fraternal twins.

however, only women ovulate. So the connection is only valid on the mother's side of the family. while men can carry the gene and pass it on to their daughters, a family history of twins doesn't make them any more likely to have twins themselves.

if your father was a twin, but you weren't, are you more likely to have twins? it's a common misconception that twins skip a generation in families. there is absolutely no evidence, other than circumstantial, that twins are more likely to occur every other generation. however, if you consider the influence of genetic hyper ovulation, this pattern could appear in families depending on whether their children were sons or daughters.

I am Mummy to 3 year old identical twin girls. Twins run in my family...7 sets in 60 years, 4 of them all within the last 6 years! My dads sister had twins non identical boy/girl. The girl twin went on to have twins also non identical boy/girl. The boy twin, his g/f had twins non identical boy/boy. My dads cousin had twins non identical girl/girl. One of the girl twins had non identical girl/girl twins then her brothers g/f had identical twins. Then I had my twins. There are at least another 2 sets in my dads side of the family (my dads auntie had non identical twin boys who died just after birth) There are more going back a few generations in my dads side but they did not survive long after birth (preemie babies never did that long ago)

So while my twins are not the hereditary ones there was always a chance I could have non identical twins!

It is believed that as many as 1 in 7 women conceive twins but one will not be viable and will be absorbed into the lining of the womb or the placenta of the surviving twin.

It usually runs in the mothers side but if there are twins in the family on either (or both) sides then there is always a chance of it being passed on.

if twins are in the mothers side of the family, there is a possibility you will have twins. Twins have nothing to do with the males side. they dont what so ever carry the genes. your man could be a twin and your not gonna have twins.

Well, my paternal grandma had identical twins--which happen randomly. My step sister just had fraternal twins 11 weeks ago--but she was on fertility drugs. My husbands sister had fraternal twins 5 months ago--turns out his great grandparents also had a set of fraternal twins, so that kind seems to run in his family.
