Why do you feel you must rely on temp agencies?
1) Is your lack of "experience" because you have a liberal arts college degree and fear no one will hire you?
2) Are you in a transition period in your life? (ie waiting to leave for college, temporarily unemployed, retired, or about enter grad school)

There are many reasons why people prefer the temp agency. Hopefully, the reason is number 2. Don't let number 1 scare you into relying on the temp agency route just because you haven't gotten a few jobs. Plus, you'll never feel secure relying on a temp agency in the long run. Always keep looking for a more permanent job, even if you find the sweetest of temp agency assignments, it 'says' it will last a year, and the pay is high. You can't count on those jobs. Not if you're trying to support yourself or a family.

3rd, you might want to try a vocational school (ITT, DeVry). This might be the time in your life where you do decide either to get more schooling and seek out a specific trade. Government assistance is available.

Any option is better than relying on temp agencies. It's not their fault, that's just the nature of the beast.

Watch the paper some companies have high turn over because they don't pay well, take the job even though the pay sucks. Then after a couple of months go back to temp agencies with some experience. Keep the cheap job but let company know you are looking for more.

It sucks to have to do that, but it is a vicious circle can't get the job if you don't have the experience, can't get the experience if you don't get the job.

Many companies out there don't pay big or have problem managers so they have high turn over to the point that they will be willing to train and take on less experienced employees.

If I were you I would look at why you are not appropriate for what they are looking for. If it is a temp company for clerical jobs, then you need to have a semi-professional appearance and skills pertaining to clerical work...if it is a labor type temp company, just go look for a job with out their help!

Last option is always the unemployment office, also called a Workforce Commission, they have endless numbers of jobs on file in your area. Just go to the place where you would go if you were looking to get an unemployment check. THEY WILL HELP YOU, not only find a job but help you gain computer skills if needed, and teach you how to write an effective resume.

GOOD LUCK!

You may just need to work on taking a different approach... Rewrite you resume taking a skills approach rather than a chronological history. I've read a terrific article about this on-line:

Beyond this, work on your networking. Who do you know in town, who do they work for? Do you know anyone with their own business that could let you work for them even for a short time to get a little experience for your resume. Try volunteering a couple of hours a week, it is a good way to meet people.

I don't know about your town, but unemployment offices often offer resume writing help and training opportunities.

Don't give up! Keep a resume handy with you at all times. Opportunities often present themselves when you least expect it.

It is January and they don't have that much jobs. My sister registered through a temp agency last Feb and after she finished a one day assignment, she was on the waiting list. I would wait until march-July. Those months are the busiest. Something is bound to happen.

Take a job as a bike messenger...

Then when you deliver mail/packages ask about job opportunities at that company and always leave a copy of your resume.

You'll be working (and getting paid) and job hunting at the same time.

It can't be that big a city then. Most cities in Europe have literally hundreds of temping agencies. Maybe you should move cities.
