Yes, I hate to break it to you. He said this during a debate with Stephen Douglas in 1858. Check out this link to find some other surprising facts about the "Great Emancipator".

Lincoln said that if he could end the Civil War without freeing the slaves, he would do it, and if he must free the slaves in order to hasten the end of the war, he would do that too. He was very reluctant to, as he put it, "tamper" with private property - which slaves were thought to be.

Lincoln was a pragmatist. He knew what motivated northerners, and a major motivator at that time was the abolitionist sentiment that had swept the northern states. He fervently believed that preservation of the Union was absolutely imperative, and most historians agree that he was correct.

Lincoln didn't even want to accept blacks into the Union army at first. Even General George McClellan, commander of the Army of the Potomac, was a ranting bigot who, when enlisting blacks as soldiers was suggested, fumed "Keep the n*ggers back and I'll save the Union!" Fortunately, McClellan's incompetence soon got him replaced, and President Lincoln relented, allowing the enlistment of black men. Tens of thousands of black men subsequently served, fought ferociously, and proved once and for all that blacks are the physical and mental equals of white folks.

Don't be too harsh on Lincoln. A great many abolitionists wanted to end slavery, but also felt that the freed black folks should be repatriated back to Africa and that it would not be good for the nation for them to remain here. Although he did have his doubts, Lincoln came to recognize the true worth of black men and women. His signature was required when a soldier was to be awarded the nation's highest combat decoration, the Medal of Honor - and Lincoln signed a number of orders issuing that medal to black soldiers.

And if you really still feel terrible about Lincoln, read, in it's entirety, his second inaugural speech, in which he laid out his plans and intent towards the defeated Confederacy. One of the noblest speeches ever given, in my humble estimation. The most memorable phrase from that speech..."With malice towards none..." tells you of the soul of this man, who wanted to forgive what millions of northerners felt was treason worthy of hanging the entire male population of the eleven states that had seceded at the beginning of the Civil War. And then read about "reconstruction" from a Southerner's point of view: it was horrible, and had that fool Booth not been able to carry out his evil plot, things would have been very, very different - and very much better all around.

You are taking his words out of context. You need to see his actions not just read the words.
Lincoln was in the middle of a very bloody civil war when he emancipated the slaves. This was as we know a good and right thing to do but by making the war about slavery he was in danger of alienating several border states who mite cede from the union if they felt they were fighting for blacks.
Although he freed the slaves he could not opening say that the war was for slavery or he may have lost the war and the united states as we know would have ceased to exist and slavery would have continued in the south.

I don't think you should dismiss Lincoln as your hero you should study his actions a little bit more than his words.
As they say actions speak louder than words.

after he had the troops drafted to invade the south and he freed the SOUTHERN slaves not the northern ones, so they might flee to Free states and join in the fight against the Southerners,as draft riots were breaking out all over the north s they did not want to fight the south as the southerners were killing Yankees two Yankees for every one southerners killed, they did not want to die,so they resisted the draft. so he freed the slaves so they would fight the southerners.when he was done with that,. he said he was shipping ALL blacks to south America.he called it colonization.but some idiot killed him.before he could do this.he did not think of blacks as being equals, at all, he dispised them he said, thought of them as very inferior creatures, yes he called them creatures.they have a soul in them like anyone and can be whatever they want to be.now.I wish them all the very best.

I've heard that he said something along these lines, so I looked it up. The following link takes you to a website that discusses the statement he made.

Apparently he said it in order to get elected so that in the long term he could bring about the abolition of slavery (the statement was made when he was in the South).
I think you can keep your hero.

Lincoln would be very proud to know Obama is carrying on with his complete disregard for states rights and the founding fathers' intent for our country.
