How do I know when I am in labour?

Labour is different for every woman, and pinpointing when it begins is not really possible. It's more of a process than a single event, when a number of physiological changes in your body work together to help deliver a baby. If you're truly in labour, one or more of the following five things will happen:

• Your cervix will become progressively thinner and softer (also called effacement) and dilated - up to 10 centimetres.

• Contractions occur at regular and increasingly shorter intervals and become longer and stronger in intensity.

• You may have persistent lower back pain, often accompanied by a crampy premenstrual feeling.

• You may notice the appearance of a bloody show (a brownish or blood-tinged mucus discharge). If you pass the mucus plug that blocks the cervix, labour could be imminent - or it could be several days away. Still, it's a sign that things are moving along.

Everyone's labour varies. Some people complain of lower back ache, some get stomach cramps, some get both. Most people describe it as bad period pains. This has certainly been my experience. Think it's called labour because it is hard work.

A 'show' is a lot like the discharge women get from time to time in their normal monthly cycle. You can't really miss it, there will probably be more of it than a normal discharge. If you think you may have had a show and are worried, call the antenatal ward or delivery suite...they won't mind. A show is often an early indication of labour.

Good luck and remember...it can't be as bad as some of the horror stories you'll have heard, or no one would do it again.

A show is when the mucus plug in your cervix drops out. This can indicate labour, but can still take a few more days before your baby comes out. A show just looks like discharge (sometimes pink-streaked, as there may be a little bit of blood in it) or it can be like a brownish jelly. Most women don't even have a show until they are ready to push so don't panic if you never have one.
As for knowing when your in labour, I asked a similiar question earlier and people were really helpful. Apparantly early labour can be like having period pains/cramps that become more regular and intense. Also your waters break. (But this also might not happen until you are ready to push)
I am 41 weeks pregnant and still waiting for my baby! Lol but good luck with yours! hope everything goes well! xx

you just know trust me.....when labour comes on for real (and its not just braxton hicks) then it gradually gets worse, and also unless you've had riduculously painful practice contractions then there is a big difference. It may start off with period type pains but it soon gets worse. As for the show. I had one with both my kids and it was like a plug of clear mucus containing a bit of blood. Some women miss theres as it dissapears down the loo but if you see it you will know. Goodluck with everything!!

Contractions can start off like a mild period pain and gradually get stronger and closer together
The pains may also be braxton hicks too but if you are in any doubt talk to your midwife who will check you over and be able to tell you whether or not you're in labour
As for what a show looks like- its a thick mucus 'plug' that can also be a pinky, slightly blood stained colour-mine was
A show might happen a few weeks before delivery tho!
GOOD LUCK and try not to worry

I felt like the pains were generally like a bad period pain but would stop and then start again. The pain then got much worse than "a period pain", that's when I starting timing them. This was all over a time period of 8 hours before I went to the hospital, and trust me, you will know when to go to the hospital. The show is mucus type plug mixed with blood and gunge, and yes, you will know what it is when you see it. Good luck.

Every one feels different...I can understand your worry as I was just like yourself worried that "what if I wouldn't know" but I did its not possible not to know as its very painful and pain grows every half an hour and then becomes every 15 mins....till its every 3 seconds...so don't worry you can't miss it..some women's labour starts when their water is broken..

A show is like a discharge but its light pink...

You get cramps like period pains and a feeling that I can only describe as having a stick up your butt(not that I have ever had a stick up my butt but I assume that is what it would feel like)..as for show it is a small discharge sometimes with a dot of blood in the middle....unlike mine I looked like I had been masacared but apparently it was nothing to worry about.....just take a couple of paracetamols and have a warm bath was the advice from the midwife! hmmm

You will start with menstrual-like cramps...approx.15-20 minutes apart. It might feel alot like your Braxtons but the real labor pains come mostly from your back to the front, while BH are mostly felt in your abdomen and can go away with change of activity or position.

Real labor contractions: LONGER STRONGER, CLOSER TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!
