It gives a sense of belongingness. Being a special someone to somebody makes you feel very special and nice. It brings in the feeling of you being wanted and loved. And Valentines day is a perfect time when you are perceptive of their significant other's needs and take the time to show it. It may be a simple peck on the check, a well-timed "I Love You" or a helping hand--all signs that you are reading the "needs" of those you care about. It ethically should not take a special day to show you care however if there is a special day exclusively called for love such as Valentine's Day- you would definitely take a moment to make that special someone feel special.

Good question. For me thats kind of hard to answer. I haven't had a Valintine in about 8 years. So my mom has gotten me something every year(Silly but sweet, I'm 29).

I do have one this year. So lets work with that. To me it means to have someone special in your thoughts that you long for even if you already have them. So this is just another day where you can think of something clever and neat to do for them. Although you could think of something clever and neat outside of Valintines day anytime.

It means they like you.
Of course to me (I'm 46) it means that the card, candy and flower industry will gouge innocent people for hundreds of dollars of crap which will be gone in a day. Sorry, too commercialized like every other holiday anymore. I get a card for my kids and husband and instruct them NOT to get gifts. These are the people I love every day without looking at a calendar. I do for them every day and they do for me, THAT is love. Not just Feb. 14th.
