Yes it is compulsory ! if you are traveling to france / spain / etc you must have either a GB sticker ( if travelling fron england ) on the back or the new style e.u number plate`s .
And you must also carry spare light bulb`s / fuses / a warning triangle / all your document`s and have head light converters !
If you get caught without them then it`s a on the spot fine ( and i mean on the spot ! pay there & then ) if you have no money then they will escort you to a cash machine to get it !

Lesroys is wrong. He's just been lucky.
It is mandatory to have a country badge. Just because the border police don't enforce it doesn't make any difference. I suspect that they would only pick up on its omission if they were to stop you for something more serious.
