This should get you started. You might also consider taking lessons at a local fabric store.

You can start at your local fabric store. If you tell one of the sales clerks that you are a first time stitcher, they can most definitely help you find simple, beginner patterns then help choosing the fabric, thread or other things you'll need. Your local library will also be a great source of books for beginners. Sewing clothing is mostly just reading and following patterns. Once you get comfortable with the basic techniques, you can move up to some really awesome clothing with 'designer' details.

You can go to Wal-Mart or any craft store and buy a pattern and it will have pieces of the outfit, you cut them out and cut and place material over the pattern and sew very easy.
