You need a Firearm Owner's ID (or FOID). Many gun shops require that you show this when you buy a gun. Many states have a waiting requirement. Check the laws in your state for the exact requirements.

If you live in CA you must pass a gun safety test and have a "Handgun Safety Certificate." Most gun dealers can issue this cert after you pass a test. You will also be subject to a FBI background check in every state. In CA you will also have to demonstrate that you know how the gun works, how to load and unload and so forth. Just go to your local gun store and ask them what your state requirements are. If you don’t know what you are doing they will teach you and most have safety classes they offer. Most gun dealers are extremely helpful and want you to know what you are doing anyway before they sell you any firearm. A misdemeanor involving domestic violence will disqualify you for 10 years if I'm not mistaken. And that will show up during the background check.

In Virginia, at least at gun shows, you need to have your drivers license and registration to prove your identity/citizenship and residence. Other states are probably the same. At gun shows, most dealers prefer cash, and this makes the transaction easier. You will probably have to fill out a form registering your purchase (not the weapon, just the purchase). Check online and see if your state has any guidelines or regulations. Most official state websites have something posted. Every state has different requirements. I never had to have any sort of license or permit. I would suggest purchasing at a gun show, rather than at a shop. Less red tape.

In most states you must first apply for a FOID card (Firearm Owners ID). These can usually be gotten through a currency exchange or gun store. You will needa picture ID to send along with your application.

If you have a criminal record or have been convicted of a felony, you may not qualify for the priviledge of legally owning a firearm.

Depends on your state. If you're 18 you can legally get a rifle or pistol. And 21 to get a concealed weapons license.

You should have no criminal record and you must have your proper identification.

You probably need a license to purchase a pistol and police will handle a background check.

All you need to do is go purchase one. If Texas has any special process the gun shop will walk you through it.

No felonies. Bring all ID's. 18yrs old, 21 for handguns.
They run a fedral background check, and sometimes there's a waiting period before you can get your gun. After initially picking out my gun, it took less than 20 minutes, in and out.

It's pretty much the same in most states: clean background and some form of ID. I'd also suggest you have some brains and common sense. Firearms can be dangerous in stupid hands.
